Emptyset : Demiurge Variations

Forget record of the week, this release is for us record of the month. Since we first heard the Roly Porter rework of Function as the closer to the Emptyset Boiler Room mix four months ago we have been eagerly awaiting for this to drop on vinyl. The stunning Porter mix is backed with a hauntingly dark rework by Subtext label mate Paul Jebanasam.

Om Unit : Aeolian EP

Om Unit's third EP for Civil Music. Following on from EPs ‘Transport’ and ‘The Timps’, 'Aeolian' showcases five emotive tracks that rouse the senses and together form a cinematic and journeying soundtrack. Focused predominantly, but not exclusively, around the 85/170BPM the unique qualities of ‘Aeolian’ are echoed with the choice of remixers; revered producers Reso and Sweatson Klank both contribute revisions to the package.

On 'Ulysses' a deep melodic synthscape combines with elements of liquid, footwork and trap. Reso's remix adds constantly evolving jungle drum programming while Sweatson Klank adds a laidback swagger creating a piece of warm downtempo soul. 'Dark Sunrise' features the elegant voice of Tamara Blessa broadcasting a message for change. 'Fumes' merges half time bump, warm bass and head-nodding throbs. 'Lightworkers Call' features Kromestar, it's got 90's west coast hip-hop feel but is driven by the snapping snare and a wall of square wave bass. 'Slowfast Matrix' sits somewhere between juke, jungle and liquid as it balances stormy synths and layered rhythms before the second drop deletes the sped-up drums and favours a half-time alternative.

Om Unit is one of the most exciting artists to emerge in recent times, and packed with unique combinations of style, and diverse demonstrations of its makers adaptability, Aeolian shows us why. Just as the 'Aeolian processes' shape the surface of the Earth, Om Unit is helping to shape music’s electronic landscape.

Aeolian features artwork from Kutmah and is released 30th July on Civil Music

Tracklist :
1. Ulysses
2. Dark Sunrise (feat. Tamara Blessa)
3. Fumes
4. Lightworker's Call (feat. Kromestar)
5. Slowfast Matrix
Digital Extras will include

John Macedo : Silt (C20)

JOHN MACEDO is a polymath sound alchemist from London. Having previously collaborated / performed with / remixed the likes of Phil Julian, Trencher and Chris Tosic, Mr MACEDO briefly descends to the Beartown gutter to bestow two deranged compositions upon our bewildered furry ears.

SILT is loud, abrasive, textured and depthless. Composed with and performed on a custom-built modular analogue system, MACEDO's label debut guides the listener into the inhospitable wilds of a glitching drone hinterland. Flowing and churning over the course of 10 enlightening minutes, side A shows an experienced disaster-naut at the peak of his powers, casting spells and taking metaphorical lawnmowers apart in equal measures.

Flip the biscuit to reveal harsher, more opaque tonal structures. Entrancing, meditative and densely layered, side B is a cathartic realisation of the inherent blissful reality that comes from "making a right proper racket and that"

Edition of 30 with textured paper insert, powder blue on-tape stickers and deceptively peaceful pea-green tapes.

Available now at Beartown Records

Peter J Woods : Fear

Peter J Woods : Fear c20/c9/c17 Box Set
3 x Hi-bias Type II cassettes housed in a vinyl box w/ Full color cover + 3 full color inserts

Over the past three years, noise artist Peter J Woods has been slowly changing his style from straight ahead harsh noise and power electronics performances to one that more closely resembles darkly absurdist theatre. “Fear” represents the culmination of this change, collecting the audio portion of five previously staged theatre works (and one brand new, purely auditory piece) on three different cassette tapes. As a musical work, “Fear” finds Woods in familiar, albeit a more distilled form. Harsh walls and howled vocals interrupt long silences and minimal, textural recordings that create a tone of unsettled calm and ensuing terror. More then just exploring the notion, these cassettes induce a primal and unending fear.

Biosphere : L'incoronazione di Poppea

Released 16th June, an eagerly awaited 12 track download album from Biosphere on his Biophon label on Bandcamp

The dialogue explaining the ideas behind the release taken from the Bandcamp page ;
"The music is based on Claude Monteverdi´s opera of the same name.
L'incoronazione di Poppea (The Coronation of Poppea) is an Italian baroque opera first performed in Venice during the 1642–43 carnival season. The music, attributed to Claudio Monteverdi, is a setting of a libretto by Giovanni Francesco Busenello. One of the first operas to use historical events and people rather than classical mythology, it adapts incidents from the writings of Tacitus, Suetonius and others to recount how Poppea, mistress of the Roman emperor Nerone (Nero), is able to achieve her ambition and be crowned empress. The opera was revived in Naples in 1651, but was then neglected until the rediscovery of the score in 1888, after which it became the subject of scholarly attention in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Since the 1960s, the opera has been performed and recorded many times"

Kenny Larkin Classics Mixes 1 + 2

Detroit Techno heavyweight Kenny Larkin this week uploaded 2 classic mixes, well worth a listen..

Between The Cracks : Concrete Sound System Compilation 2012

BETWEEN THE CRACKS, the innaugural compilation release for CSĂ‚² Recordings, offers an eclectic mix exploring the possibilities the post-electronic age has to offer. A forty minute journey into the crevices, BETWEEN THE CRACKS plays like a sonic narrative to modern style and form in the ever present future.

Galaway's Jimmy the Hideous Penguin weaves turntablism into bass heavy IDM. Native Hawaiian CRUT chops up an ambient strut. New York's HPrizm (High Priest of Anti-Pop Consortium) delivers sci-fi infused global beats. Atlanta's Real Soon melds an electro-acoustic sound that blurs the line between them.

BETWEEN THE CRACKS serves as an audio mission statement for CSĂ‚² Recordings moving forward - to continue the exploration and development of systems of sound that push the possibilities beyond perceived limits.

Track listing :
1. Recompression Chamber (Burn Unit) - Concrète Sound System
2. Dred - Jimmy the Hideous Penguin
3. Oddible - 22Tape
4. Process - Justin Deremo
5. Waho Holoholo - CRUT
6. Set the Melody - amukaT
7. Sunny Winter - Danny Drive Thru
8. Streetlight Flicker - Adam Bomb

Legowelt : Memphis Rap Mix

Legowelt : Memphis Rap Mix :

Via Legowelt's Website :
"Summer is coming so I made a little mix with my favorite 90s Memphis rap trax - one of the greatest music genres in history especially during its golden days circa 1993-1994 - Think over the top OMINOUS John Carpenter basslines, more tape smudge and obscurity then all minimal wave records in history, enchanting inspiring melodies and pure unadulterated poetry. More then 50 minutes of the most obscure best Memphis Rap songs all mixed to perfection to play LOUD in your car cruising in your neighborhood while u laugh and smirk at all the pedestrian jock bro mediocrity moving past you"
